NEW YORK—Faysal Kabir Mohammad Himon, the driver of a cab that jumped a curb and severely injured a British tourist on Aug.21, said that media reports which quoted him as saying that he is not a good driver have been taken out of context.
Fernando Mateo, who spoke on behalf of Himon, said that a reporter approached him with his driving record and asked what a record like that could mean. Himon responded to the reporter in regards to his record, not in regards to his driving in general, Himon explained.
Himon spoke briefly to the media outside Bellevue Hospital, where Sian Green, the woman who lost her foot in the gruesome crash, is being treated.
Contrary to what was reported in a New York Post exclusive, Mateo said that Himon wants to continue working as a taxi driver.
Himon has seven violation points on his license and, contrary to media reports, does have the right to continue driving as long as he pays a $1,000 fee to the Taxi and Limousine Commission, said Fernando Mateo, head of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, who attended the press conference with Himon.
Both Himon and Mateo insisted that the crash was an accident. Mateo said that the federation will resist any attempts to suspend Himon’s license.
