UASD: Protests on a Santo Domingo State University campus have been ramping up.

A police officer died after being shot in the face, and a student and possibly others were injured during demonstrations at the university on April 23, according to Dominican Today. Twitter pictures show blood on the sidewalk where the officer was shot, and the wound while he’s lieing in the hospital.

The group that attacked Julian Suarez, the colonel who died, are unidentified. A corporal, Rafael Batista, was hit by a stone. The leftist group Wide Popular Struggle Front may be behind the attacks and the protests.

University officials gave a media briefing on April 23, saying they have nothing to do with the protests. Head of the university Fevrillet Mateo Aquino announced classes are suspended until Wednesday morning because of the strike, “to protect the integrity of the university family,” according the university’s Facebook page.

Aquino called on the people behind the protests to come forward and talk with authorities about their complaints, which are at this time is unclear.

The university in the Dominican Republic was created in the early 1500s, and has about 170,000 students spread across multiple campuses.
