Infant used as shield: Officials said a man used his 7-month-old infant as a human shield during a police standoff in Oregon.
Raleigh Reynolds was suspected of burglary when they saw him hastily exit his house, hop a fence, and then rushed into his sister’s home next door, reported KTVB, citing Nate Thompson with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
Reynolds, of Escatada, Ore., came outside but he tried to use his infant son as a human shield during a police standoff.
He eventually surrendered and the seven-month-old child was not injured. The baby was reportedly handed over to family members.
Police charged him with burglary, endangering the welfare of a child, and resisting arrest.
His mother, Karen Founds, told KATU that he made some bad decisions.
“As Raleigh came out of the house, he picked up the baby to bring him out. They were screaming at him to put him on the ground,” Founds told the station.
Police told KPTV that he did not respond to commands and they thought he was armed.
Deputy Daniel Moyer told the station: “He was just standing there, telling us he didn’t want to leave the baby in the house, despite the situation. I believe he was using the infant as a shield.”
