Dozens were detained by police during a pro-Palestine demonstration in a parking lot on UCLA’s campus May 6.

After police dismantled an encampment set up on UCLA’s campus last week, protesters returned in a demonstration in a campus parking lot.

More than 40 protesters were taken into custody, local news outlet KTLA reported.

Meanwhile, approximately 50 people gathered, also May 6, inside the school’s Moore Hall, staging a sit-in protest. However, the crowd dispersed from the building by 9 a.m., according to KCAL 9.

A little after 10 a.m., the university announced classes would be virtual-only for the remainder of the day.

The incident comes after more than 200 were arrested on UCLA’s campus May 2 as police also dismantled an encampment outside Royce Hall made of tents, plywood, and other materials.

Protesters are calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war, which began Oct. 7 with Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel that killed 1,400 people and saw the taking of 253 hostages.

Since then, Israeli strikes have killed about 33,600 Palestinians and injured more than 76,200, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported last month. Some hostages captured by Hamas have been released, but at least 32 have reportedly been killed in captivity.
